Matcha has become one of my most favorite teas. I’ll apologize but… if you haven’t heard of it by now, you are officially living under a rock! This tea which has been around for thousands of years has been hitting the mainstream markets as the health enhancing “it drink”. Unlike the generic green tea leaves that you steep in water, Matcha is a soft powder that is made up of ground whole leaves that dissolve into your beverage. By consuming the whole leaf, you are getting more nutrients and health benefits than that of a typical steeped green tea.
Even though Matcha tea has more caffeine than a cup of coffee, or tea, it is known to have a calming effect on your body. For centuries Monks have drank this tea before meditation for the calming effects and also the awareness that arises from its caffeine. Unlike coffee, the caffeine from the tea releases over a period of a time, so you don’t get that jittery caffeine high and drastic caffeine crash like you would with most modern day caffeinated beverages.
From a fitness and wellness aspect, this vibrant green drink is an excellent way to get you pumped full of antioxidants. Put down the Goji berries (major sugar) and dark chocolate, this tea will provide you with more antioxidants than any other item you can consume. The powerhouse drink will help boost your metabolism, increase fat oxidation, enhance your endurance during a workout and in general, will improve your overall health.
You can find Matcha tea at your local coffee shops, or at your favorite health food store. You can even buy it on Amazon if it saves you some time. Traditionally Matcha is enjoyed as a tea. I enjoy mine in my mid-day shakes mixed with unflavored protein. I’ve grown to crave the taste of this crazy green tea. Yet, there are many ways to consume it, and it doesn’t have to be limited to a beverage. For some fun and not so traditional recipes check out this article to see how you can make Matcha a staple in your cooking and baking as well. Of course, I would recommend taking it in as pure of a form as possible.
